October is National Dental Hygiene Month!

Are you aware that your mouth can be an early indicator of serious health problems? Many people are not aware that their teeth and mouth can show signs of medical problems. Your dentist is trained to recognize these signs and refer you to your medical doctor for follow up. Finding problems early is the key to maintaining your best health—both medical and dental! This is one reason why it is important to keep your recall dental visits.

For most people, once every six (6) months (or twice a year) is recommended. If you have gum or periodontal disease, you need to come more often (usually three (3) or four (4) times a year) because periodontal disease can worsen rapidly and with little warning.

Routine check ups are especially important for children. The mouth and facial structures of your children change quickly as they grow—so quickly that frequent appointments are necessary to monitor your child’s development.

While our focus is the health of your teeth and gums, your mouth can often alert us to health problems. Your dentist is on the front lines of early detection for a number of potential health concerns, not the least of which is oral cancer. Putting off dental care may result in more costly and more involved dental procedures. Please make a dental check up part of your routine!
