Happy New Year! Make Seeing the Dentist in 2021 One of Your Resolutions
posted: Dec. 30, 2020.
As I write this, the end of 2020 is fast approaching. With all that's happened this year, most of us will likely be happy to put 2020 behind us. Many people have been delaying or putting off dental care due to fears about COVID-19.
Unfortunately, I have seen an increase in the tooth decay rate in those who have come in for dental visits. It could be that the masks we're wearing now are drying out our mouths--less saliva means less rinsing action on the teeth. It could be that now that we're staying home, we're drinking more sugary beverages or eating more sugary foods.
For those who have gum disease, keeping it under control requires regular removal of the plaque and calculus that hold bacteria against and below the gums. The longer you wait, the more likely the destruction of the bone around your teeth can start again.
For these and other reasons, I urge you to make seeing a dentist a priority for 2021. Dental offices in Ohio are very safe. A recent American Dental Association article stated that nationwide only 1% of dental offices have had an office-related-coronavirus-infection. Sterilization, disinfection, and PPE are all hallmarks of Ohio dental offices.
