Got Crooked Teeth?

What activities are you looking forward to this season? Do any of them involve photographs? Do you find that you try to hide your teeth because of how they look? If your teeth are crooked or uneven, you have several options available to you to make them look better.

One option is moving teeth to the proper position and straightening them. Orthodontia (or-though-don-sha) is the branch of dentistry that deals with moving teeth. Though most people think of teenagers as the ones who have braces, orthodontia can be done at almost any age. Traditional or tooth colored braces are one option, and they work very well. If you don’t want braces on your teeth, you can also see if you are a candidate for oral aligners (such as Invisalign). These are clear plastic trays that you wear over your teeth that gradually move your teeth to new positions. Another option is to create the illusion of straight teeth through the use of cosmetic dentistry. (Be aware though that this illusion may work better from some angles than others, since your teeth will still be in the same positions.) Often you can use crowns or veneers to reshape teeth and change their color. Crowns go around your tooth like a cap while veneers are more like a fake fingernail that is bonded to the side of your tooth that people see when you smile. In many cases, your dentist can take impressions and have the dental lab wax up an idea of how your smile will look when completed. (There may be a charge for this, but it does give you an idea of what can and can’t be accomplished for you.) Learn more about crowns in this video: Crowns & Bridgework . If you’re not sure you want cosmetic dentistry, you could try an appliance such as Snap On Smile that is removable, but fits over your own teeth. You can choose from several style options. The Snap On Smile brand is one that can be worn while eating (but you remove it to brush and floss) where others are only for cosmetic use and can’t be used while eating.

So if you don’t like your crooked teeth, there are ways to make them more appealing! You can find out more about these dental procedures in the patient education section of my website www.drjrobb.comSmile Makeover is a particularly interesting one.
